1) Those scamps at Starbucks can't get ANY name right! Look at how they misspelled "Andy"! 2) Cripes! How tough is "A-N-D-Y"??? One order of "remedial spelling" for these Starbucks baristas! 3) I have had ENOUGH! Every time I go to Starbucks, I SCREAM my name at them repeatedly, and say, "Do you understand, you fucking moron?" And every time they still get it wrong!
You could tell from the lyrics of Purple Mountains that things weren't going so well with Dave Berman. A few weeks ago, I listened to an interview with him from earlier this summer, and while there wasn't a special tone of despair in his voice, things didn't sound great. The new album is wonderful - I'd put it on par with Bright Flight, and there are a handful of songs on there that are some of his best ("That's Just the Way That I Feel" in particular...I mean the lyrics aren't shy about where he was at), but from listening to the interview, it felt a lot like this was done out of economic necessity rather than a deep need to connect with people through music. In both the lyrics and his own words, things were getting bleaker and he was spending more and more time isolated. But I thought that touring for the first time in forever meant that things weren't as dire. ■ The more I get into this industry and meet the people behind the music/TV/films I love, the more I realize it's a real crapshoot whether the person is real or not. Great art can seemingly be made by empty people with a gift for mimicry or an aptitude for "what if?". Maybe my generation's need for authenticity is either vestigial or quixotic, but I like art that actually flows out of the life of the person making it. Dave Berman put his entire ego into his work, and I think that's why it connected with so many people. ■ I'm either too spectrum-y or too walled off for celebrity (take the term how you want) deaths to really affect me, but this one hit in a way I hadn't felt before. Not even when Kurt Cobain killed himself at the height of my Nirvana obsession. I've bonded with so many people over the Silver Jews. My friend Kyle and I probably would have never started to make music together if we hadn't spent an evening in the freshman dorms talking about our love of Starlite Walker and The Natural Bridge. We covered so many SIlver Jews songs. We had aspirations of covering them all. I don't think there are existential inflection points really, but Dave Berman was part of a matrix of motivations that made me want to make things for a living.

I don’t know what the line is between “arty” and “banal” but I’ll tell you what, anything I touch with these godlike hands divinely transcends those categories in a mockery of all Earthly aesthetics. I won’t call myself a God, after all, that’s for history to decide, but I will say I am immortal and will outlast the very last atom of this universe.
